Delphi is approximately 178 kilometers northwest of Athens. By private car on the E962 motorway, the drive takes around 2.5 hours each way, depending on traffic leaving Athens in the morning.

The Archaeological Site

The main site is large and requires 2–2.5 hours to do properly. The key points of interest, walking uphill from the entrance:

• The Sacred Way — the main processional route, lined with treasury buildings
• The Treasury of the Athenians — small but remarkably well preserved
• The Temple of Apollo — the heart of the sanctuary, where the oracle sat. Six columns still stand.
• The Theatre — above the temple, with views across the entire valley to the Gulf of Corinth
• The Stadium — a 10-minute walk above the theatre. Often skipped by tour groups. Worth the climb for the complete picture.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum

Located directly adjacent to the site entrance. Budget 60–75 minutes. The museum contains the Charioteer of Delphi — one of the finest surviving bronze sculptures from ancient Greece — and the Sphinx of the Naxians, among dozens of other artifacts recovered from the site. Do not skip the museum. It provides the context that makes the ruins legible.

Practical notes: The site involves significant uphill walking on uneven ancient paving. Comfortable shoes are not optional. The site is exposed — in summer, visit before 11:00 if possible. In spring and autumn, the weather at altitude can change quickly; bring a layer.

Arachova: The Village Worth Stopping For

Arachova sits 10 kilometers east of Delphi at 950 meters altitude, directly on the road between Athens and the archaeological site. Most day tours drive past it. We stop there.

Arachova is a mountain village that functions as the ski resort town for Mount Parnassus in winter and a genuine Greek village the rest of the year. It's known for its local wine (Arachova has its own appellation), its pasta (hilopites — flat egg noodles sold from shop fronts), and its setting — the village cascades down a narrow ridge with views that rival anything on the coast.

A 45-minute stop in Arachova for coffee and a walk through the main street is one of the better things you can add to a Delphi day trip. It's a real place, not a tourist construction.

July–August: Hot. Very hot at the exposed site. Go early — aim to be at the entrance by 08:00. Crowds peak in August.

September–October: Excellent. Crowds thin, temperatures drop to the ideal range, the light is exceptional in autumn.

November–March: The site is open year-round but weather at altitude is unpredictable. Arachova becomes a ski resort from January — a completely different experience, and a good one.
